Sarah Bax Horton: Arm of Eve – Investigating the Thames Torso Murders
Sarah Bax Horton: GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
We are delighted to welcome award-winning local author and researcher Sarah Bax Horton to the Club for an intriguing evening exploring one of Victorian London's most chilling unsolved mysteries.
While Jack the Ripper remains the most famous unidentified killer of the nineteenth century, another serial murderer stalked London before him. Known as the Thames Torso Killer, this elusive figure murdered and dismembered at least four victims between 1887 and 1889, leaving investigators baffled and the public horrified.
Drawing on the research behind her acclaimed book Arm of Eve: Investigating the Thames Torso Murders, Sarah will discuss how she applied modern criminal profiling techniques to a Victorian cold case, leading her to identify a compelling suspect — a known criminal with intimate knowledge of the River Thames and its waterways.
The talk will also include fascinating behind-the-scenes insights into Sarah's involvement in the BBC documentary series Lucy Worsley's Victorian Murder Club, which recently brought renewed attention to the case.
Following the talk, there will be an opportunity for questions before a book signing and an informal Club Supper with the speaker.
Tickets
Members: £15
Guests: £20
Tickets include a glass of wine on arrival.
A two-course Club Supper will be available after the talk for £22.50 per person.

Louisa Treger: A Fatal Love – Ruth Ellis, Justice and the Stories We Tell
Louisa Treger: GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
We are delighted to welcome acclaimed novelist and biographical fiction writer Louisa Treger to the Club for what promises to be a fascinating and thought-provoking evening.
Louisa will discuss her latest novel, A Fatal Love, based on the life of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Britain. While Ellis's story has often been reduced to a sensational crime, Treger's novel seeks to uncover the coercion, violence and abuse that lay behind the headlines.
In this engaging talk, Louisa will explore the research and inspiration behind the book, her feminist reimagining of Ellis's life, and the enduring questions it raises about justice, domestic abuse and the treatment of women by the legal system. Seventy years after Ruth Ellis's execution, her family's campaign for a posthumous pardon has once again brought her story into the public eye, making this discussion particularly timely.
Following the talk, there will be an opportunity for questions before members and guests are invited to join Louisa for an informal Club Supper.
Tickets
Members: £15
Guests: £20
Tickets include a glass of wine on arrival.
A two-course Club Supper will be available after the talk for £22.50 per person.
About the Speaker
Louisa Treger is the critically acclaimed author of four novels: The Lodger, The Dragon Lady, Madwoman and The Paris Muse. Her work has been translated into several languages and has twice been selected as The Times Historical Book of the Month.
In addition to her fiction writing, Louisa has contributed to publications including the Financial Times, The Times, The Telegraph, Tatler, BBC History Magazine and English Heritage. She is a regular speaker at literary festivals and cultural institutions, has appeared on BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking and BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, and serves as Deputy Chair of the Board of the Oxford Literary Festival.
A compelling evening of literature, history and contemporary releveance.

Victorian London Clubland and Society in the Nineteenth Century
Nicholas Travers, GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
Throughout the nineteenth century, London’s gentlemen’s clubs stood at the heart of power, privilege, and identity. Behind the polished doors of Pall Mall and St James’s, politicians plotted, aristocrats socialised, and the city’s elite shaped the world beyond. These clubs were more than elegant retreats — they were microcosms of Victorian society, reflecting its ambitions, anxieties, and contradictions.
We are delighted to welcome Nicholas Travers, historian and author of Victorian Britain Day by Day, for a vivid journey into the world of Victorian clubland. Drawing on his extensive research into nineteenth‑century life, Nicholas will uncover the rituals, rivalries, and remarkable characters who defined London’s most exclusive institutions — and reveal what they tell us about the society that built them.
What to Expect
Nicholas will guide us through the hidden world of Victorian clubs, including:
· Inside the Clubhouse: How London’s great clubs — from the Reform to the Athenaeum — became centres of political influence, intellectual exchange, and social hierarchy.
· Power, Privilege & Identity: What membership meant in a society obsessed with class, reputation, and belonging.
· Life Behind Closed Doors: The customs, scandals, and eccentricities that shaped daily life in clubland.
· London in Transition: How the growth of the metropolis, the rise of the middle class, and the pressures of empire reshaped the city’s social landscape.
About the Speaker
Nicholas Travers is a writer and historian specialising in nineteenth‑century Britain. He is the author of Victorian Britain Day by Day, a richly detailed chronicle of life across the era, praised for its lively storytelling and meticulous research. Nicholas holds a BA and MA in History and Politics from the University of Exeter and has spoken at cultural institutions including London’s Open House. His work brings the Victorian world to life with clarity, colour, and a deep understanding of the forces that shaped modern Britain.

The Beautiful Buildings of Our Part of the World
Author Nick Manning, GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
The area around the Wimbledon and Putney Commons is blessed with many fascinating buildings. Wonderful houses, churches, hospitality and sporting venues, and other notable man-made structures abound.
‘The Beautiful Buildings of Wimbledon, Putney and Roehampton’ by Nick Manning tells the story of these buildings and the intriguing people who lived in them. The structures are the silent narrators of our history and the extraordinary events that took place around them. This new book is a sequel to ‘The Commoners’, the story of the most ‘notable neighbours’ of our area, which Nick talked about at the club when it first appeared.
We are delighted to welcome him back for an illuminating evening exploring the man-made treasures of our area. Nick’s presentation will be tailor-made to feature the area immediately around the Winchester House Club, with stories that go beyond the book.
What to Expect
Nick will present his customised version and describe the man-made structures and the lives of the people who made the area around the club remarkable. The lives of royals and aristocrats, senior military commanders, authors, activists, clergy, industrialists, sporting heroes and many others are told through the structures they created or lived in.
Nick will sign copies of both books afterwards, and £5 per copy sold will be donated to the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators and Wimbledon BookFest.
About the Speaker
Nick is a dedicated chronicler of our local history, writing extensively on the people and places that made our area the remarkable place it is.

Old World vs New World
A Comparative Wine Club Evening
Join us for a relaxed and engaging Wine Club evening exploring one of wine’s most fascinating themes — the contrast between Old World and New World winemaking.
This tasting will examine how geography, climate, tradition, and philosophy influence style. By comparing classic European benchmarks with modern interpretations from newer wine-producing regions, we’ll explore how the same grape varieties can express themselves in very different ways.
The evening will begin with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, followed by a guided but informal tasting of six wines. Each pairing will place an Old World example alongside a New World counterpart, allowing guests to taste the differences side by side. Expect contrasts in structure, fruit profile, oak influence, alcohol levels, and overall balance.
While final wines are being confirmed, the selection will focus on high-quality, well-chosen examples that clearly demonstrate stylistic differences and offer genuine interest and depth.
To accompany the tasting, guests will enjoy a generous sharing platter of carefully selected nibbles, designed to be substantial, sociable, and well matched to the wines.

Mudlarking: Stories from the Thames
Anna Borzello, GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
For as long as London has existed, the River Thames has been a keeper of secrets. Rubbish discarded, treasures lost, and everyday objects swept away by the tide have settled into the riverbed — only to re-emerge centuries later. Each fragment offers a glimpse into the lives of the people who shaped this city, from Roman soldiers to medieval craftsmen to Victorian families.
We are delighted to welcome Anna Borzello, one of London’s most respected mudlarks, for a captivating exploration of the Thames foreshore and the stories hidden within it. Drawing on more than a decade of searching the river at low tide, Anna will reveal what these objects tell us about London’s past — and the people who lived it.
What to Expect
Anna will guide us through the world of mudlarking, including:
· Lost & Found London: How everyday objects — from 17th‑century wig curlers to Stone Age flint tools — illuminate the city’s forgotten histories.
· Reading the River: What the Thames preserves, what it destroys, and why certain artefacts survive for millennia.
· Lives in Fragments: The human stories behind her most intriguing discoveries.
· A Curated Display: A selection of Anna’s personal finds will be on show during the event, offering a rare chance to see these artefacts up close.
About the Speaker
Anna Borzello has spent more than eleven years mudlarking along the Thames. Her finds have been exhibited across London and beyond, and she regularly speaks in schools, colleges, and festivals about the history hidden in the river’s mud. Her work has featured in podcasts, books, and the national press, and her photographs and oral histories were recently showcased in the Secrets of The Thames exhibition at the London Museum.
