GUEST SPEAKER EVENT
Andrew Lownie – Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York

We are delighted to welcome Andrew Lownie, acclaimed historian and biographer, for an evening talk on his latest book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York.

The House of York has long been the subject of fascination and scandal — none more so than Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, who, despite divorcing in 1996, continue to live together and describe themselves as "the happiest divorced couple in the world."

In this gripping joint biography, Lownie reveals what lies beneath the surface. Based on four years of research, over 100 interviews, and numerous Freedom of Information requests, Entitled uncovers extraordinary new details about the Duke and Duchess of York — from their childhoods and royal duties to financial arrangements, business dealings, and the continuing controversies around Jeffrey Epstein.

This is a rare opportunity to hear from one of Britain’s most respected royal biographers, offering a fascinating lens into the private lives of two of the monarchy’s most talked-about figures.

By William Shakespeare

PTC on Tour: 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 July and 1,2,9,10 August

Directed by Stuart Watson

I do suffer love indeed, for I love thee against my will.

Bantering bachelor Benedick's "merry war" of words with witty Beatrice seems fated to keep them apart, provoking their scheming friends to plot a happy ending for the quarrelsome couple.

Meanwhile bashful young Claudio loves sweet, naïve Hero and is loved in return.  Nothing, it seems, can prevent their marriage.  But the path of true love never runs smooth.  Foul play is afoot as devious  Don John plots to split the young lovers asunder.

Putney Theatre Company On Tour brings Shakespeare's dazzling comedy of romance, deceit and self-discovery to open-air venues around southwest London and beyond.  This concise, rollicking, sunny production will be "as merry as the day is long."

Tom Newton Dunn to talk about

"Who was the real George Mallory - and was he actually the first person to climb Mount Everest? ”

On the 8th of June, 1924, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine were seen through a telescope on the upper slopes of Mount Everest. They were never seen alive again. In 1999, Mallory’s body was found below the ridge where he was last seen. In the 100 years since his disappearance, many words have been written about Mallory, but very little has ever been published of his own thoughts.

Letters from Everest is an eye opening set of personal letters from Mallory to his family, collected and published for the first time by his great-nephew. In the letters, Mallory is completely open about his life, his climbing and especially the three Everest Expeditions he was a part of – 1921,1922 and the last in 1924. His writing is full of extraordinary insights – most of which have never been published in any form. They are a unique collection –an actual reflection, possibly the one and only, of the thoughts of a climbing legend who walked into history a century ago.

Tom Newton Dunn is a broadcaster and political commentator, and George Mallory's great nephew. He first made his name as an award-winning defence correspondent before moving to political journalism, where he led coverage of four general election campaigns and the Brexit referendum, interviewing seven British Prime Ministers and US President Donald Trump twice.

Members £15.00, Guests £20.00 to include a glass of wine.

A Club Supper will be served afterwards for £22.50/head. Please book in advance if you would like to stay for supper.

We are delighted to welcome

Jack Blackburn to talk about

THE CONFESSIONS OF TRAITORS – What the new MI5 files tell us about Philby, Blunt and British Film Stars”

On Wednesday 12th February at 7.30pm

14th January 2025: Over 100 Security Service (MI5) files are being released today covering a wide range of subjects and individuals. Most notably, the files offer fresh perspectives on notorious members of the Cambridge Five spy ring, namely Anthony Blunt, Kim Philby and John Cairncross.

The content of these files is fascinating – they include transcripts of interrogations, and of bugged telephone calls, surveillance reports, memos, reports, and correspondence – items that were considered ‘Secret’ or ‘Top Secret’ for so many years. This release, therefore, brings us rich layers of extra detail that can be added to the ‘known’ story.  Jack Blackburn has had access to these files and will be telling us what this new information reveals.

Jack Blackburn is the history correspondent for The Times. He is also their Deputy Diary Editor. He has covered numerous major stories for the paper including the death of Elizabeth II, the coronation of Charles III and the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. He has also broken stories about excavations at Pompeii, the discovery of Shackleton’s ship Endurance and fresh evidence on the Princes in the Tower. He is also a regular contributor to Times Radio.
