UK Defence in Dangerous Times: An Evening with Lt Col (Rtd) Richard Williams OBE

Richard Williams OBE, GUEST SPEAKER EVENT

In February 2022, the geopolitical landscape of Europe changed forever. As Russia launched the first war of conquest on the continent since 1945, the then-Defence Secretary issued a stark warning: "UK defence is not fit for purpose."

Four years on from that pivotal moment, where do we stand?

We are delighted to welcome Lt Col (Rtd) Richard Williams OBE to the Club for an incisive briefing on the state of our national security. Drawing on decades of experience at the very highest levels of military and diplomatic planning, Richard will take stock of the progress made since 2022.

What to Expect

Richard will provide a "state of the nation" overview, sketching through:

· Our New Alliances: How the UK is repositioning itself on the global stage.

· Force & Equipment: A candid look at our front-line capabilities and deployments.

· Adversary Tactics: What our rivals have been up to while the West recalibrates.

· The Special Relationship: A deep dive into UK-US defence links, explaining why these bonds remain as critical to Washington as they are to London.

About the Speaker

Lt Col (Rtd) Richard Williams OBE brings a wealth of "inside the room" perspective. His 30-year career spanned the RAF and Reserve Army, with operations in Lebanon, Somalia, the Gulf, and the Balkans.

His credentials include three years in the Pentagon (USAF War Plans) and a mobilization into the Cabinet Office for Gulf War II. He has served as Deputy High Representative of Bosnia under Lord Paddy Ashdown and has briefed both the House of Commons Defence Committee and the US Embassy.

France Beyond Bordeaux: A Fresh Look at French Wine

Join us for a relaxed and sociable Wine Club evening exploring France beyond its most famous labels. This tasting is designed to showcase the breadth and character of French wine once you look past Bordeaux, focusing on distinctive styles, historic regions, and grapes that reward curiosity.

Across the evening, guests will taste six French wines that highlight a different side of France. We’ll explore French sparkling wines from outside Champagne, chosen to show just how much quality and elegance can be found beyond the headline region. We’ll also taste Malbec from Cahors, its original home, where the grape produces darker, more savoury and structured wines than many people expect. Completing the selection will be two wines from the Loire Valley, showcasing the region’s trademark freshness and versatility through both white and red styles.

The tasting will be hosted but informal, with short introductions to each wine and plenty of time to enjoy, compare, and discuss them at your own pace.

To accompany the wines, each table will be served generous grazing platters, featuring a mix of cheeses, cured meats, bread, olives, and complementary accompaniments — substantial, sociable, and well matched to the wines on the evening.

This event is ideal for regular Wine Club attendees, members who enjoy French wine and would like to broaden their horizons, and anyone who prefers a friendly, relaxed tasting rather than a formal wine lecture. No prior wine knowledge is required.

£30 per person, including:

  • A welcome drink on arrival

  • A tasting of six French wines

  • Substantial grazing platters for the table

The evening will begin with a glass of organic Prosecco on arrival, followed by a guided but informal tasting of six Italian wines, including crisp northern whites, characterful central Italian classics, and warming southern reds. Wines on the evening will include examples from Veneto, Marche, Tuscany, Piemonte, and Puglia, offering a true snapshot of Italy from north to south.

To accompany the tasting, guests will enjoy a generous sharing platter of Italian-inspired nibbles, including cured meats, cheeses, bread, olives, and a hot savoury bite — designed to be substantial, sociable, and well matched to the wines.

Sound Bath

What is a Sound Bath?

A sound bath is a deeply immersive, meditative experience where you are “bathed” in the soothing vibrations of sound. Using instruments such as crystal singing bowls, chimes, gongs, and drums, a sound bath helps to calm your nervous system, release stress, and bring your body and mind into a state of harmony and balance.

You simply lie down or sit comfortably while the sounds gently wash over you – there’s no water involved, just pure vibration and energy.

Benefits of a Sound Bath:

🌿 Deep relaxation and stress relief
🧠 Quiets the mind and supports emotional healing
💤 Improves sleep quality and reduces anxiety
💓 Balances the nervous system and heart rate
🌈 Enhances clarity, creativity, and a sense of inner peace
⚡ Realigns your energy centres (chakras) for overall wellbeing

Sound baths are suitable for all ages and no prior meditation experience is needed. You simply allow the sound to do the work – all you need to do is rest and receive.

Much Ado About Nothing - in the Riverside Garden

Much Ado About Nothing

By William Shakespeare

PTC on Tour: 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 July and 1,2,9,10 August

Directed by Stuart Watson

I do suffer love indeed, for I love thee against my will.

Bantering bachelor Benedick's "merry war" of words with witty Beatrice seems fated to keep them apart, provoking their scheming friends to plot a happy ending for the quarrelsome couple.

Meanwhile bashful young Claudio loves sweet, naïve Hero and is loved in return.  Nothing, it seems, can prevent their marriage.  But the path of true love never runs smooth.  Foul play is afoot as devious  Don John plots to split the young lovers asunder.

Putney Theatre Company On Tour brings Shakespeare's dazzling comedy of romance, deceit and self-discovery to open-air venues around southwest London and beyond.  This concise, rollicking, sunny production will be "as merry as the day is long."
